Medications and Your Upcoming Allergy Appointment

List of Medications to stop before appointment


These may affect allergy skin testing. Please give us a call if not sure about which medication to take


7 days prior to your appointment

Refrain from taking: Amytriptyline, Doxepin, Elavil, Imipramine, Remeron, Sinaquin, Tofranil.

5 days prior to your appointment

Refrain from taking prescription antihistamines [Allegra, Fexophenadine, Clarinex, Cyproheptadine, Hydroxyzine, or Atarax, Xyzal] Including eyedrops [ Pataday, Patanol, Elestat, Optivar, or Zaditor].
ALSO STOP THE FOLLOWING OVER THE COUNTER medications: Claritin, Alavert, Loratidine, Zyrtec, cetirizine

48-72 hours prior to your appointment

Refrain from taking, the nasal sprays Astelin or Patanase, over the counter antihistamines like Benadryl or chlorpheniramine, or any cough or cold preparation.

24 hours prior to your appointment

Refrain from taking acid blockers including Axid, Cimitidine, Pepcid, Ranitidine, Tagamet, and Zantac.

On the day of your appointment ONLY

Refrain from using bronchodilators, including Albuterol, Brea, Accuneb, Advair, Atrovent, Combivent, Dulera, Duoneb,Foradil, Ipatropium, Servent, Spiriva, Symbicort, Pro-Air, Proventil, Maxair, Ventolin, or Xoponex.

You MAY take the following medications

Any other medication prescribed for you including heart, blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetic medications.
Any inhaled or oral steroids including Pulmicort, Qvar, Flovent, Azmacort, Prednisone, Orapred, or Pediapred.
The asthma medications Singulair and Accolate.
Any OTC nasal decongestant or saline nasal spray or Nasalcrom.
Any steroid allergy sprays (i.e. Flonase, Fluticasone, Nasacort, Nasarel, Nasonex, Omnaris, Rhinocort, Veramyst,).
Any oral decongestant such as Sudafed, Entex PSE, Guiafed, Humibid, or generic equivalent (Sudafed Plus may not be taken).
The acid medications Aciphex, Maalox, Mylanta, Nexium, Prevacid, Prilosec, Protonix, or Tums.
